“For one human being to love another; that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.” – Rainer Maria Rilke
If love is really THE active practice, it requires the notion of being a lover, of being in love with the universe, in love with living, with giving and receiving in equal measure. Therefore to commit to love is fundamentally to commit to a life beyond dualism.
That’s why love is so sacred in a culture of domination, because it simply begins to erode your dualisms: dualisms of male and female, right and wrong, us and them.
“If I were really asked to define myself ……. I would start with stripping down to what fundamentally informs my life, which is that I’m a seeker on the path… a path about love.” Bell Hooks
What has always excited me and has been the motivation of much of my life – my lifting and falling- is sharing the Beauty and Meaning that can be discovered within the realm of love.
In practicing a tradition of love, we have to embrace the ongoing work which is needed in a contemporary culture that appears to have fallen out of love with itself.
Each moment can be regarded as an incredible journey of exploration on how to develop our love in the face of overwhelming distraction, injustice, propaganda, and unprecedented challenges to virtually everything that constitutes normal life as we would love to live it.
From where we stand now, we can begin the work of clarifying the knowledge and practice that a tradition of love offers us in this very moment. More especially at a time when even the sovereignty of our minds is at stake.
What is called for is a spiritual alchemy of courage and love, bonded, irrevocably, as a power and truth that can sustain us during personal challenges, and societal upheaval. We, all of us, have a deep well of wisdom that we can draw on.
We all have the practical models of character at the core of our loving selves; we have a somatic embodied knowledge of truth that needs, however, to be continually re-discovered, understood, and integrated for each of us personally from moment to moment.
We should admit that we do not have all the answers, as we stand honestly before life with all our vulnerabilities; remembering that we can open and turn for guidance to Universal Intelligence itself. We are able to call to mind the moral principles embodied by so many who have trod this path before and who tread this path right now alongside us, the knowledge of love at the heart of all life.
So as we stand at the nexus of technocratic innovation, and the distraction of accelerating change; let’s step wholeheartedly into the flame of love, trusting that we are able to draw upon the guidance of all mysteries to embrace, preserve, and to grow our love.
