In this reflection I am using the concept of Divine from the PIE root dyeu “to shine.”
Searching for and rediscovering the true self is in my experience, the essential task that will gradually open us to receiving love from, and giving love to all others, and ourselves.
You and I (and every other created thing) begin with a unique divine DNA, an inner destiny as it were, an absolute core that knows the truth about our being. This true knowledge is tucked away in the essence of our being, a knowing that begs to be allowed to be seen, to be fulfilled, and to show itself.
We are meant to be divine for this is the true self. Historically, this true authentic self was often called “the soul”. This ‘soul’ understood that we the divine and “all on Earth that doth exist” are not separate, but one!
I often wonder why we so resist this understanding of who we truly are. For most of us, this seems just too good and too weird to be true. Even though, with just a little openness you can find so much evidence that it exists all around us. Is it, I often ask myself; because we are afraid to bear the burden of divinity – of shining?
As Marianne Williamson says:
“Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
Maybe we realise subconsciously that if we really believed that we are each of us temples of divine, then we would have to live up to it.
The true self is the Divine Indwelling, the Shen, the Spirit, the heart deep within us. I would say that the true self is precisely the divine part of us that is great enough, deep enough, gracious enough to fully accept all the human parts of us.
Again in my experience we are not connected to our divinity, to our shining, we tend, for so many reasons, to turn away from what would so wonderfully enhance our often embarrassingly limited humanity. It seems we are caught in a conundrum, where we can simultaneously know we are children of the universe, whilst not knowing how to embrace this gift.
I believe the true purpose of a mature relationship with who we are, is to fully engage with the ever new experiences of our true self. If our daily living does not do this, it is an unfulfilled life. Every story, every moment, every breath, serves one purpose; to allow us to experience our true self—who we are in life and what life is in us—and to live an open, generous life from that Divine Infinite Source.
